Xanatos can’t remember exactly how old he is. Something like seventeen, maybe eighteen. But his birthday, along with his past is something he’d rather leave forgotten. Instead, he concentrates on the things that make life worth living; killing vampires and finding new ways to enjoy the sexual high that brings. As much as he might wish to be alone, he never can be. Inhabiting his body by some process he doesn’t care enough to understand is a demon he calls Legion. Legion can’t remember who he used to be, but certainly thinks it must have been someone very important. It’s like having an arrogant but impotent devil constantly commenting on everything you do. In some sick way, he’s almost like Xanatos’ conscience. Which fits with his unique sense of right and wrong. More wrong than right if he can help it.

Things have been going well, which is why Xanatos’ decision to return to the Holy City of Grace is beyond stupid, it’s suicidal. But something takes him over, and he finds himself sneaking inside the floating fortress and making his way to the place he used to call home. As much as he wants to run from his past, it’s only waiting for the right moment to spring. He isn’t good. He’s done some pretty awful things. But even more troubling is the very powerful evil that once used to be part of his life. With demons in control of the surface of earth, his past may have more meaning than he realizes.

What he finds there is the past come to life. His nemesis, his teacher, leader of the Paladins. Only, this paragon of honor and justice helps the demonic Xanatos escape the city after a nearly deadly chase through the pulsating heart of the huge floating fortress. Xanatos is injured and in the care of the last human being to show him any kindness, the fire mage, Lex. His body will heal, but his real wounds run far deeper.

All the while, in the darkness something malevolent begins to stir.

Genre

The Xanatos series is much more about action and adventure than really detailed fantasy or science fiction. But it does take place in a distant future where demons have taken over the world, and the greatest of them, Satan, moves in secret for some purpose only he knows. For those who enjoy the surreal or fantastic, there is a lot here to tempt you. But if you are turned off by things like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, don’t worry. Xanatos is really about dealing with a somewhat shitty life that just happens to have things like vampires and werewolves running around.

It does rely upon mythology and tradition that you’ll find fairly familiar. However, it isn’t just a retelling of old stories. There is a whole world underneath it all that has a unique spin on the history you learn about in school. If you like to get into the details, there will be some of those too.

Basically, it’s a really fast, fun story that doesn’t pull any punches. It goes after the gritty, grimy things that other books turn away from. There’s language and sexual tension, but also really great jokes and characters you will care about. You won’t be bored.
